How does IATF 16949 define quality management?

The global automotive industry stands for excellent process quality, continuous improvement processes, the highest standards, and innovative strength. IATF 16949 is the standard for quality management systems of suppliers in the automotive industry.

The standard was developed by a joint working group, the International Automotive Task Force (IATF). Their goal was to improve quality capability and the entire certification process within the supply chain, ensuring system and process quality to the highest degree.

Since its publication in October 2016, IATF 16949 has been the successor to ISO/TS 16949, making it the entry ticket for this internationally operating industry. IATF 16949 is an extension to the globally recognized ISO 9001:2015 to extend into the automotive industry. It is structured according to the common basic structure for management system standards of ISO (High Level Structure).

IATF 16949 defines quality management in the automotive industry. As a result of the revision, the standard has undergone a number of automotive-specific changes in addition to the adaptation to ISO 9001. These include changes in the handling of safety-relevant parts, for products with integrated software, and in traceability.

How can my organization benefit from an IATF 16949 certification?

Most Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) members of the IATF require mandatory proof of a quality management system. Whether it's a small company, a medium-sized business, or a corporate group, an IATF 16949 certificate is the ticket to enter the automotive industry.

Companies certified to IATF 16949 improve reliability and process capability throughout their chain of supply, minimize defects and risks, and help reduce waste in the entire supply chain.

The IATF 16949 standard is relevant to customer-specific requirements for anyone working for the automotive industry in the areas of production or assembly, or listed as a potential external supplier.

What are the steps to achieve an IATF 16949 certification?

In the first step of the process, we discuss your company or organization, your current quality management system, and the goals of IATF 16949 certification. After this conversation, you will receive an individual quote tailored to your company's needs.

These steps serve to prepare the actual certification audit. Project planning start with finding mutually agreeable dates for an audit within the guidelines of the standard. In addition, an optional gap assessment provides an opportunity to identify system strengths and areas for improvement in advance.

The assessment starts with a stage 1 audit, which is the system analysis and an evaluation of your documentation, objectives, the results of your management review, and internal audits. The Stage 2 audit must be completed after a maximum of 90 days from when Stage 1 was started. In this stage, the auditors take a holistic view of people, processes, results and show you potential opportunities for improvement.

After the audit, the results are evaluated by an independent certification board. If all requirements are met, you will receive the IATF 16949 certificate.

Annually, key components of the system are re-audited on-site for further improvement.

The certificate is valid for three years. Before the certificate expires, DQS Inc. will start recertification to ensure continued compliance with the requirements. We recommend recertification three months (90 days) before certificate expiration.

What is the cost of IATF 16949 certification?

The cost of IATF 16949 certification depends on a number of factors including whether a certified management system is already in place. The size of your company and the complexity of your quality management system also influence the duration of the audit and the cost of certification.

For these reasons, the certification costs for IATF 16949 cannot be given as a lump sum. We are happy to provide you with a customized quote, tailored to your company or organization.
