As the business climate changed over the last few years, companies have had to adapt and make the necessary changes to stay in business. With those challenges, you wouldn’t expect many companies to thrive in the diversity, but that is just what Core Technology Molding Corp did.

Core Technology Molding Corp won the 2022 North Carolina Business Award for Best Small Business in the state.  With about one million small businesses in North Carolina, landing on top was no easy feat. Though in business for 17 years, the key turning point for the company was about seven years ago when they moved from being a Tier 2 supplier for BMW to a Tier 1.

According to Geoff Foster, President and CEO of Core Technology, it gave their company credibility with other companies and showed that they were financially stable and wouldn’t affect their customers’ supply chains negatively, among other things.

With the pandemic, the company entered into the biological pharmaceutical industry and started to supply to Merck and Pfizer, just to name a few. They also built a second clean room, and the company is now 60% biological pharmaceutical, to capitalize on the lower volatility of the industry.

The company was 60% automotive but is now 30% due to their growth in the biopharma industry. Their growth is something to be proud of. They grew 300% during the pandemic and will grow another 100% this year. To keep up with the growth, the company was hiring a lot of employees that had been laid off from retail stores during the pandemic and trained them on molding to start a new career.

Not only have they experienced continued growth, but the quality of their products also remained at the highest levels. The company is delivering on time, will double their number of employees they had since moving into their facility, and has gone 10 years without a safety recordable.

How has their quality remained so high? Core Technology has been certified to ISO 9001 for ten years, with a continual improvement mindset. In addition, they partnered with DQS to get certified to IATF 16949 and ISO 14001, which is required to be a Tier 1 supplier for BMW Manufacturing, Volvo & Mack Trucks and Volvo Cars.

“DQS has been very supportive and keeps us in line,’ said Foster. “Our customers are thrilled we’re a tier 1 and that we’re certified.”

The certifications set the company apart from their competitors. They have a lot of automation, which includes four presses and five robots that were added during the pandemic. In addition, their contracts in the biopharma industry helped the company to grow in the automotive industry as well due to their clean facility, which is also LEED certified.

When looking to the future, Core Technology is continuing to raise the standards and continually hiring. They plan to continue growth in both the biopharma and automotive industries. The company will increase capacity for injection molding and add another 25% in capital equipment. Core Technology was also awarded a $3 million grant and will be adding 6,000 square feet to their facility in April.

The future is bright for Core Technology, and DQS is proud to partner with the company on their certifications.
