The ResponsibleSteel standard was initially published on 05 November 2019. The organization "ResponsibleSteel" created the standard to certify steel producers who act sustainably. The standard itself includes 12 principles, covering topics of social governance as well as environmental protection or social interaction with employees.

Is ResponsibleSteel certification suitable for you?

ResponsibleSteel certification is suitable for all companies from the steel industry manufacturing steel products or processing raw materials for steel production. Service providers, mines, or manufacturers of end products that contain steel but are no longer transformed, such as vehicles, building shells, and packaging materials, are not eligible for certification.

Since it is internationally recognized, the certification is suitable for any company from the steel industry with global trading partners. The certificate not only provides evidence of sustainability in the use of steel as a valuable resource. Rather, steel processing companies from the industry can contribute to creating socially responsible jobs and manufacturing products with due regard for ecology and economy. It does not matter whether the company is large or small, the certificate is suitable for companies of all sizes.

Why is ResponsibleSteel certification recommended?

In times of dwindling resources and increasing awareness among stakeholders and customers of the need for sustainability, the steel industry in particular finds itself in the spotlight as an energy-intensive industry. With ResponsibleSteel certification, companies can demonstrate that they meet all important sustainability criteria and thus demonstrate that they are responsible players in the steel sector.

Über ResponsibleSteel™

ResponsibleSteel™ is a non-profit organization made up of members from the steel industry and other sectors. Sustainability NGOs, for example, are members of ResponsibleSteel™. With ResponsibleSteel certification, the independent organization created the first globally valid multi-stakeholder standard for the steel industry. The certification standard is based on the ISEAL Codes of Good Practice.

Certification procedure

First, the company carries out a self-assessment against the certification requirements. Then, the company contacts and approved certification body such as DQS.

Stage 2 includes an on-site visit by DQS auditors, interviews with site management, workers and external stakeholders

After the audit report has been prepared by DQS, a review is performed by the Assurance Panel.

If the audit is passed, companies receive the certificate, which is then also published on the ResponsibleSteel website. Compliance with the standards is continuously monitored and surveillance audits follow. Recertification takes place after three years.
