In December 2023, a new German version of the international standard for safety and health at work (SGA) was published: DIN EN ISO 45001:2023-12. This article presents a short overview in English for our international readers. If you want to know more about the changes to the German version of ISO 45001, please switch to our German language page.

Requirements of the new DIN EN ISO 45001 remain unchanged

To anticipate this: Companies certified to ISO 45001 can breathe a sigh of relief, as the requirements of the new DIN 45001 remain largely the same. The SGA standard has only been editorially revised. There is therefore no immediate need for action - certificates remain valid without any transitional periods. The reason for the new publication as DIN EN ISO 45001 is the two letters EN, which from now on also identify the standard as a "European standard". There has therefore been no ISO 45001 revision in the narrower sense, but only an unchanged adoption of ISO 45001:2018 as a European standard.

Differences between the old and new ISO 45001

The text and the basic structure (High Level Structure / Harmonized Structure) of ISO 45001:2018 have been adopted unchanged, apart from a few editorial adjustments. There are no new or amended requirements in the new German standard, not even in the annexes.

In several places, particularly in chapter 6.1 "Measures for dealing with risks and opportunities", the term "evaluation" has been replaced by the term "assessment". The renaming was done in order to achieve better consistency with the term "risk assessment".

What impact will the revision of ISO 45001 have on existing certificates?

None for the time being - ISO 45001 certificates can be converted to the new DIN EN ISO 45001:2023-12 with the next recertification. No additional effort is required for this. At the customer's request, the certificate can also be adapted and converted during the current cycle. This is expected to be possible from summer 2024 after the DAkkS (Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH) has adapted the accreditation.

Revision of ISO 45001 not yet in sight

It remains to be seen when the next revision of the international standard ISO 45001 is due. It can be assumed that it will be based on the revisions of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. The responsible committee already voted on a corresponding recommendation in November 2023.

Numerous topics have already been collected that could be considered in a 45001 revision. However, it is still too early to make reliable statements as to which of these will actually be the focus of a revision. There is still no binding timetable for implementation.

New guideline DIN ISO 45002:2024-02

ISO 45001 defines the criteria for an occupational health and safety management system and provides guidance for its implementation. The OHSAS standard aims to prevent work-related injuries and illnesses and actively promote health and safety performance in the workplace.

General guidelines for implementation are contained in the ISO 45002 guide, which provides guidance to organizations for the creation, implementation, maintenance and continual improvement of the OHSAS management system. The original English version of the guide has been available since February 2023. The German version DIN ISO 45002 is scheduled to be available in April 2024.

New DIN EN ISO 45001:2023 - Conclusion

At the end of 2023, the international standard for occupational health and safety management, ISO 45001:2018, was updated in Germany. This led to the publication of a new DIN standard: DIN EN ISO 45001:2023. The reason for this is the unchanged adoption of the currently valid international standard ISO 45001:2018 by the European Committee for Standardization CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation) as EN ISO 45001:2023.

The revision by the responsible German standardization committee in the DIN Standards Committee for Organizational Processes also only resulted in editorial adjustments, no changes to the content. A revision of 45001 has therefore not taken place.
