"How will ISO talk about quality in the future? The new ISO 9000 provides the answer - and it's coming in 2026." ISO 9000 is currently being comprehensively revised together with ISO 9001 - with clearer terminology, a stronger strategic focus and a modern vocabulary. The final standard will probably not be published until 2026, alongside the new ISO 9001.

Overview: What is ISO 9000?

The ISO 9000 standard is a central component of the ISO 9000 series of standards and defines the principles and terms for quality management systems (QMS). It is aimed at organizations of all sizes and industries and creates a common understanding of key quality issues. Unlike ISO 9001, it is not certifiable, but serves as a supporting reference standard for the definition and application of a quality management system.

ISO 9000 ensures that terms such as process, non-conformity or customer requirement are interpreted and used in an internationally uniform manner. The standard also conveys the seven principles of quality management, such as customer focus, leadership and continual improvement, which serve as guidelines for an effective management system.

The role of the standard in quality management

ISO 9000 creates conceptual clarity and consistent definitions that not only facilitate the application of ISO 9001:2015, but also support internal communication and training within an organization. Especially in international projects or audits, the standard helps to avoid misunderstandings in the interpretation of requirements.

Revision of ISO 9000:2026

Reason and objective

The current version of ISO 9000 dates back to 2015. In autumn 2023, it was officially decided to revise the standard - in parallel with the ongoing revision of ISO 9001. The need arises from changing requirements in practice, for example due to digitalization, new forms of work and a growing understanding of topics such as stakeholder management, knowledge assurance or the risk-based approach.

The Draft International Standard (DIS) is available from DIN Media:

E DIN EN ISO 9000:2025-05 (Draft) Quality management - Fundamentals and terminology (ISO/DIS 9000:2025): German and English version prEN ISO 9000:2025

The aim of the ISO 9000 revision is to modernize the language of the standard, update its content and align it even more closely with the Harmonized Structure (Annex SL) of the ISO management system standards. This should not only improve comprehensibility, but also strengthen consistency within the ISO family.

ISO 9000 is, so to speak, the dictionary for ISO 9001 - and this dictionary must match the grammar (Annex SL) according to which the ISO management standards are written.

ISO 9001 revision: everything you need to know

Your go-to source of the world's most important quality management standard

ISO 9001 is getting an update — with an impact on more than one million organizations worldwide. We cover all key developments, milestones and expert insights for you. Benefit from our close ties to the standardization committees and our long-standing experience as a pioneer in ISO 9001 certification.

Focus of the ISO 9000 revision

The changes discussed so far are aimed at making the standard more precise, up-to-date and consistent. Central topics of the revision are

  • Clearer definitions of risk-based thinking, interested parties, knowledge management, etc.
  • Separation of risk and opportunity as independent concepts (currently still combined)
  • Modernization of the language to reflect current developments such as digital transformation or agile working
  • Greater emphasis on leadership and strategic orientation in the quality context

The seven principles of quality management are also to be revised and the language sharpened.

Schedule and status of the revision

The revision of ISO 9000 is taking place in parallel with the revision of ISO 9001. A first Draft International Standard (DIS) has been available since April 2025 (issue date 2025-05). The DIS is the preliminary version of an ISO standard that is published for review, comment and approval by the national standards organizations. However, due to additional coordination steps - such as the need for a second committee draft for ISO 9001 - a delay is also to be expected for ISO 9000. At present, everything points to publication in the course of 2026.

ISO 9000 - significance for practice

Even if certification according to ISO 9000 is not possible, its revision has a noticeable impact on quality practice in companies. The standard provides the linguistic basis for quality management systems, influences training, documented information and the design of management manuals. Consistent terminology plays a key role, particularly when introducing or updating QMS software, preparing for audits or exchanging information with international partners.

Managers and quality managers should therefore follow developments closely and check at an early stage to what extent existing definitions of terms and processes need to be adapted to the revised standard. The publication of the first official drafts also offers the opportunity to actively provide feedback in the context of comment rounds.

ISO 9000 - Conclusion and outlook

The revision of ISO 9000 is more than just linguistic cosmetics - it reflects current developments in quality management and paves the way for future-proof, strategically oriented quality management. The close alignment with the Harmonized Structure also ensures that terminology and definitions of terms fit seamlessly with the other management system standards.

Organizations would do well not only to keep an eye on the upcoming changes, but also to actively integrate them into their management practice. The final publication is expected in 2026 - in time to be effectively implemented together with the new ISO 9001.
