Before answering the question of what is SPC, it is necessary to give an answer to the question "what is statistics". Statistics is a branch of science that enables the monitoring and tracking of events that occur under the influence of different reasons, and after the necessary data are brought together in a systematic way, predictions and interpretations are made with a certain precision.

Galileo Galilei, in one of his sayings, said "Measure what is measurable and make what cannot be measured measurable" and emphasized that the book of nature is written in mathematical symbols.

The question of what is SPC can be answered as follows in the light of these sentences:

SPC - Statistical Process Control is a tool that enables the use of statistical principles and techniques in all production processes in order to collect, monitor, analyze and interpret data in the process in order to ensure that a product is produced under optimum conditions, to bring solutions and preventive actions.

SPC ensures that a production process complies with predetermined requirements and aims to minimize the production of non-conforming products. All data collected in this process helps to make decisions based on mathematical and statistical foundations in determining corrective and preventive actions.

Why should SPC be applied?

A process or machine may undergo changes over time and as a result, the related product may go beyond the targeted tolerance limits. In such a case, the process and machine are taken under control with SPC methods.

At the same time, in order to meet the requirements of the IATF 16949 standard, the so-called "Core Tools" such as PPAP, APQP, FMEA, SPC and MSA should be used in harmony with each other. For example, appropriate statistical tools should be identified for each process during the advanced product quality planning (APQP) stages and specified in the control plans.

Advantages of SPC

Manufacturers in the automotive industry face increasing competition every day. Increases in labor, fixed costs and raw material costs are not only uncontrollable, but also make it difficult to produce low-cost products. Therefore, all costs that can be reduced are becoming more important for manufacturers.

This is exactly where SPC comes to the fore. With effective use, SPC can monitor a process in full time, identifying deviations at the point of interest before a defective product appears and suggesting preventive and corrective actions to prevent the continuation of these errors.

After an accurate assessment of the production process, the implementation of SPC is key, especially where production waste is or could be high.
