The Labour Department (LD) of Hong Kong has responded to the recent surge in fatal and serious work accidents in the construction industry by establishing Special Task Forces dedicated to inspecting and enforcing safety measures at construction sites. These task forces have been operational since late November and have focused on sites involving new works and high-risk processes.
According to information released by the government, the Special Task Forces conducted inspections at over 100 construction sites across the territory between November 29 and December 8. These inspections resulted in the issuance of more than 150 improvement notices and suspension notices. Notably, lifting operations involving cranes were suspended at two construction sites. The LD also initiated approximately 120 prosecutions, primarily related to work at height, lifting operations, personal protective equipment, and electrical work.
Moving forward, the LD will continue to conduct rigorous inspections and enforcement actions at construction sites. Any violations of occupational safety and health (OSH) legislation will be met with appropriate actions under the law. Furthermore, the LD is actively engaged in a new round of public outreach to disseminate OSH messages through various channels. This initiative aims to remind employers and employees of their responsibilities, enhance safety awareness among workers and frontline supervisors, and foster a culture of occupational safety and health in the construction industry.
In this blog post, we will explore how ISO 45001, an internationally recognized standard for occupational health and safety management systems, can further enhance safety practices in the construction industry.
