ISO 45001 – Leadership and Commitment
Effective Occupational Health and Safety Starts with Senior Management
Senior management is the key to an effective OHS management system: this is the view of the international standard ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety. Clause 5.1 requires that they “assume overall responsibility and accountability for the prevention of work-related injuries and illnesses, and for the provision of safe and healthy workplaces and work activities.” Top management therefore bears a special corporate responsibility that requires their personal involvement and oversight. To achieve this, OHS aspects must no longer be viewed in isolation, but must be fully integrated into business processes.

ISO 45001 Places the Onus on Top Management
Ever since the 2015 revision of the quality management standard ISO 9001, one thing has been clear: top management bears significantly more responsibility for the management system than before. Due to the uniform structure of modern management system standards (known as the High Level Structure), ISO 45001 also follows this consistent management approach.
Furthermore, with regard to occupational health and safety (OHS), the level of detail—with 13 requirements for top management—even goes beyond that of ISO 9001. In our free white paper "ISO 45001 – Leadership and Commitment", we focus, among other things, on classic OHS shortcomings in connection with the responsibility of company management.
