Actively Involving Employees

Section 5.4, ‘Consultation and participation of employees’, is regarded as one of the key factors for an effective OHS management system in accordance with ISO 45001. This is because the most important stakeholder in this system is the organisation’s own employees. To ensure that consultation and participation are genuinely put into practice, management is required to create suitable conditions and establish effective processes. We outline exactly what this entails.

  • When to consult, when to involve?

Active employee participation plays a key role in identifying hazards at an early stage and devising practical improvement measures. At the same time, it raises safety awareness within the organisation and promotes acceptance of occupational health and safety measures in day-to-day working life. ISO 45001 therefore requires not only that employees be kept informed, but also that they be explicitly involved in relevant decisions and processes relating to occupational health and safety.
