ISO/TC 176 is the Technical Committee of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which is responsible for the development of standards in the field of quality management and quality assurance worldwide. Since its foundation in 1979, it has played a key role in shaping the foundations of modern quality standards - primarily through the globally recognized ISO 9000 series of standards.
What is ISO/TC 176 Quality Management?
The committee has the task of developing internationally valid standards that support companies and organizations in systematically improving their processes and products with regard to quality. ISO/TC 176 pursues the goal of standards that are cross-industry, practical and globally applicable.
The focus is on the development and maintenance of the ISO 9000 family, which defines the basic principles and requirements for quality management systems including the globally recognized standard ISO 9001.
Who is represented in ISO/TC 176?
The Technical Committee 176 is international. Every ISO member country can participate - either as a "Participating Member" (P member) with voting rights or as an "Observing Member" (O member) without voting rights. The delegations are made up of experts from various fields: Business, science, standardization institutions, authorities and interest groups.
Representatives from over 100 countries regularly participate in the development of standards - including the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), the Austrian Standards Institute (ASI) and the Swiss Association for Standardization (SNV).

Thomas Votsmeier, Head of Standardization at DGQ (German Association for Quality), which is closely associated with us as a shareholder, is supporting the current revision of ISO 9001 together with other experts from DIN, DGQ and EOQ. He is the technical head of the DIN committee NA 147 00 01 AA Quality Management and is also an active member of the ISO/TC 176 working groups.

Which standards does ISO/TC 176 develop?
The committee's best-known family of standards is the ISO 9000 series, which is regarded worldwide as the basis for quality management systems. It includes, among other things
- ISO 9000: Terms and principles
- ISO 9001: Requirements for quality management systems
- ISO 9004: Guidelines for sustainable performance improvement
These standards enable organizations to systematically pursue quality objectives, improve processes and increase customer satisfaction. ISO 9001 certification is internationally recognized as proof of quality and is often a prerequisite for participation in supply chains, public tenders or international business relationships.
How does the ISO committee work?
And how does it influence international standards?
ISO/TC 176 is organized into several subcommittees (SCs) and working groups (WGs), each covering specific subject areas. The most important subcommittees are
- SC 1: Concepts and terminology
- SC 2: Quality Systems (responsible for ISO 9001)
- SC 3: Supporting technologies
The development of standards follows a structured process: drafts go through several comment and coordination phases in which the countries involved provide their feedback. The aim is to achieve a broad international consensus. A standard revision by ISO therefore always follows a defined and transparent procedure.
Thanks to this systematic approach and the high level of international participation, the standards developed by the Technical Committee have a global influence on quality standards, business practices and regulatory requirements in almost all industries.
What role does the ongoing revision of ISO 9001 play?
In August 2023, a simple majority in subcommittee SC 2 of ISO/TC 176 voted in favor of a revision of ISO 9001, the world's most widely used standard for quality management systems. This was remarkable in that a similar vote in 2020 had rejected a timely revision.
The decision to revise the standard "ahead of schedule" was primarily triggered by changes in the environment in which many companies operate. These include the increasing complexity and dynamics of global markets, political uncertainties and the rapid development of new technologies.
The standardization committee came to the conclusion that these changes bring with them new requirements for quality management systems - for example with regard to sustainability, digitalization and risk assessment. The aim of the revision is therefore to further develop the ISO 9001 standard in a practical way so that it remains relevant, applicable and future-proof even under changing conditions.
