At DQS, when we mention Sales, it isn’t a team that works to sell a product to companies. Instead, the Sales team at DQS initiate the partnership between DQS and interested companies to work together to attain certification goals. For this National Salesperson Day (Dec. 8th), we are highlighting a member of our Sales team to talk more about the Sales side of DQS and more about themselves as a team member.

Jim Joll, Regional Sales Manager, is the Sales contact for the Western US (Mountain time zone & West Coast Pacific time zone), including Alberta and British Columbia, CA and works with all standards (outside of Food and Medical Devices), such as ISO 27001:2022 or ISO 50001:2018. Although based in the Denver, CO area, Jim completed his bachelor’s in business administration, with a focus in Marketing & Automation, from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. And since graduating, he went directly into sales:

“I kind of always knew that sales would be for me. I like working with people. I like solving problems with people, and it just always seemed like a kind of a natural progression for me...”

His first job out of college: Pitney Bowes, which he states as “basically a master’s degree in selling” due to the “most preeminent sales training programs.” He saw this as a best fit for his skillset and goals for moving forward in sales, but also because “they had a really cool office on Michigan Avenue in Chicago.” After three years, he was steady in his sales career and has now been in sales for over 20 years. He is grateful for this opportunity to this day as he “learned a ton from it about myself and what I like to do…”

From his first job, he went into software sales and higher education, where he found his footing with working with people. An interesting fact about Jim is that he’s been on every large college campus in the US. This experience gave great insight on different regions and how every community is different. And from there, Jim continued to work within sales which led to the opportunity to become a Regional Sales Manager at DQS.

Jim joined DQS in February 2023 and has already found success in finding his place with the team:

“…having worked in the field prior to coming over in February….it’s just impressive and at times humbling and familial…the meeting that I attended earlier in the year, everybody knows each other well and cares for one another and cares about the organization. And I can assure you, that is an anomaly by my experience, not just in this space, but in general.”

And for Jim, it is everyone in the organization: operations team, sales team, management team, auditors – everyone works together well to achieve goals. And specifically, regarding the sales team, he states:

“…everyone helps one another. If you ask the team for advice on a topic, multiple people will come back to you with really, really great advice. It’s kind of a ‘rising tide lifts all boats’ mentality where we’re having a great year as a team and I think it’s down to the individual person as well as our team leads, Lisa and Ismael; I would say that it’s the team environment that is a huge, huge variable in our success equation.”

With a supportive team to answer questions and uplift each other it is clear to see why each member of the sales team is successful in what they do. When it comes to the individual member of the sales team, each will have their own way of making connections and partnerships. Each client will have different goals and specific needs when it comes to certification, and the Sales team is the first contact to learn those goals and needs to best support the client. Jim makes the point to say that as soon as someone is ready to learn more about DQS and offerings, whether its ISO 9001, ISO 14001, or any other offerings,  he will “literally drop everything to reach out” and ensure that people are contacted in a timely manner. He also likes to “call prior to completing quotes” to learn more about the client, as well as have the client get to know the person putting the quote together. He states:

“I’m interested in knowing how I can help them.  I really want to know what’s really driving their need to talk to us or other CBs [Certification Bodies] … that’s really going to help frame the go forward timeline.”

These in-depth conversations are what makes DQS what it is. DQS is not just a Certification Body (CB), but a partner to those who work with us. When it comes to having conversations, Jim wants to emphasize that “we’re listening” and wanting to be that partner that is there to support. He also states that “…in a lot of cases, I’ve made a friend, and that’s just the way I do it.”

When asked to give a quick one sentence answer about DQS, he had this to say:

“It’s a great environment to work in. The people, the peers across each respective group of the organization, care as much as I do, and it shows; the opportunity is too great, the be perfectly frank in my three decades of experience, to pass that up.”

Jim puts a large emphasis on his work ethic and tenacity to “bring it every day” is what brought him to his success and to this opportunity at DQS. He is a great asset to the sales team, as is every one of our sales team members.
