The new version 6 of the FSSC 22000 standard has been mandatory since April 2024. To help companies transition to the updated requirements, the FSSC foundation has now published an interesting analysis: an overview of the top 10 non-conformities identified during the first audits according to version 6.
This survey provides valuable insights into the biggest challenges currently faced by food manufacturers during FSSC 22000 audits. Companies that still have to complete upcoming audits can gain important insights from this and work specifically on improvements in their management systems.
At the top of the list of the most frequent non-conformities in FSSC audits is the issue of physical contamination. This suggests that in some companies, the preventive measures for avoiding foreign bodies in production processes can be further optimized to meet the requirements of the standard.
Companies' traceability systems are also often found lacking. In times of increased transparency requirements and potential product recalls, companies must ensure that they can fully trace batches and raw materials. This is the only way to react quickly and accurately in an emergency.
The top 10 non-conformities also include topics such as maintenance, competence management, quality controls and allergen management. These areas are gaining in importance as the industry becomes more complex - and pose significant challenges for many companies.
For food manufacturers who are already certified to FSSC 22000 or are seeking certification, it is therefore crucial to consistently focus on these points. Only those who optimize their own processes at the weak points will be able to master FSSC 22000 audits safely and confidently in the future.
