Who is driving the RSCI initiative?

The Responsible Supply Chain Initiative RSCI e.V. was founded by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) with 14 other members from the automotive sector. In addition to the car manufacturers Audi, Volkswagen, Daimler AG and BMW, suppliers such as Brose, Robert Bosch GmbH and Schaeffler are also among the founding members.

The aim of RSCI e.V. is to ensure high standards with regard to sustainability of suppliers in the automotive sector through independent assessments and to standardize them on a national and international level. This is intended to create added value for the client, since the assessment provides evidence of transparent and fair working conditions at its suppliers. Suppliers also benefit from an RSCI assessment, enabling them to comply with the requirements of multiple buyers with one single assessment.

The RSCI Assessments

RSCI assessments are social assessments. They are usually carried out on site at the suppliers' production facilities. The auditors do a visual inspection of the site and conduct interviews with employees. They also review relevant documents and compare them with the RSCI requirements.

After the assessment, companies receive a report that can be made available to stakeholders, customers and clients. It serves to create a high level of transparency and comparability among manufacturers and suppliers with regard to sustainable working conditions. Depending on the audit result, RSCI issues a so-called label, which is valid for three years.

RSCI assessment process

RSCI audits are awarded via RSCI's so-called bid process. To request an audit, go to the RSCI website and click on "Request Audit". DQS as well as other approved audit bodies are then requested by RSCI via an online platform to submit a bid for the audit. RSCI awards the assessment.

DQS will assign a team of qualified auditors for your assessment. An RSCI audit is conducted on-site and can take several days to complete, according to RSCI's costing guidelines. A questionnaire of just over 100 questions is worked through, which is checked and evaluated via document review, interviews with staff and management, and a site visit. Technically, the assessment is handled entirely via the RSCI online portal.

If there are deviations in the RSCI audit, they can be classified as minor, major, critical or zero tolerance. For all categories, so-called CAP processes with deadlines are provided, within which you must implement remedial and preventive measures to prevent a recurrence. Depending on the severity of the deviation, you will receive a so-called interim label or a normal RSCI label after successful elimination of the deviation. You will receive details from RSCI after registration.

The RSCI label allows you to demonstrate to your customers and other RSCI participants that your audited production site operates in accordance with the RSCI Assessment Requirements.

What does the RSCI assessment cost?

The cost of an RSCI audit is determined by various factors. In addition to the size of the company, the risk classification (low, medium, high) carried out by RSCI for the production site to be audited influences the determination of the audit time. The audit time identified in this way in turn influences the total cost of an RSCI assessment.
