Verification of your carbon footprint

Global warming is increasing at a pace that requires immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions - especially CO2. This applies to companies of all sizes and industries. The ISO 14064 standard provides clear guidelines and requirements for quantifying and verifying emissions in a GHG inventory - and does so at both the organizational and project levels.

Climate protection as part of the corporate culture

Increased confidence in your company

Transparency in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

Strengthening of your competitiveness

Information about ISO 14064

The ISO 14064 series of standards consists of three standards. ISO 14064-1 is the basis for accounting for a company's greenhouse gas emissions, i.e. for establishing its corporate carbon footprint (CCF). The standard provides information on the principles and requirements for planning, developing and reporting GHG inventories within a company.

The ISO 14064-1 standard helps you to record your company's GHG emissions in a structured way and to work specifically on reducing your carbon footprint. It provides the framework for GHG accounting and its verification. Thus, ISO 14064-1 is at the same time the basis for robust reporting. In this way, you create the basis for making your organization's efforts and success in climate protection visible, while communicating them.

The content of ISO 14064-1 is based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol). This standard was published in 1998 by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI) to standardize so-called carbon accounting. The standard is available from the ISO website.

The other parts of the ISO 14064 series of standards are:

ISO 14064-2 is a guide that can be used to record the removal of greenhouse gases or the reduction of emissions at the project level.

ISO 14064-3 forms the basis for the verification ofCO2 accounting. After successful verification, DQS uses this standard as a basis to certify that the relevant requirements for balancing emissions have been met.

Companies and organizations can record emissions by applying all three specifications. This can facilitate the implementation and development of greenhouse gas projects.

What are the benefits of an ISO 14064-3 verification?

The effects of climate change are already unmistakable today. In order to reverse the trend, all social forces are called upon to make their contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG). At the same time, political pressure on companies and organizations has been growing since the Paris Agreement on climate protection. The ISO 14064 series of standards offers the following benefits for your company:

  • You create trust in your company and increase your credibility with customers.
  • For stakeholders, business partners, customers or investors, quantifying GHG emissions and reporting them is evidence that you perceive climate protection as a corporate responsibility.
  • You make climate protection part of your corporate culture.
  • You identify control levers with which you can reduce your organization's carbon footprint and sensitize your employees to the relevance of this issue.
  • You gain transparency in the reduction of GHG emissions.
  • With verification by an independent third party such as DQS, your organization's progress in the effort to reduce GHG emissions along the value chain based on an internationally recognized standard becomes transparent.
  • Verification sets you apart from competitors who have not yet gone down this path. At the same time, you take into account possible legal and customer-specific requirements at an early stage.By determining their carbon footprint and validating and verifying it, companies and organizations achieve a number of important sub-goals:
  • You quantify direct and indirect financial risks to which your company is exposed due to rising emission costs.
  • You will identify areas whereCO2 emissions can be reduced.
  • You meet the information needs of stakeholders who want or need to report on emissions in their supply chain.
  • You make informed statements regarding the climate friendliness of products, services and organizations.
  • You attract investors who prefer climate-friendly investments.
  • You get better results in rankings and ratings, such as those produced by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

What is the process of an ISO 14064-3 verification?

The first step is to learn about your company, organization, needs and expectations. Once the goals of the verification, including the applicable standards and specifications, are defined, you will receive a quote for the pre-assessment.

The contracted verification team checks the respective statement on the basis of the previously prepared planning, applying the applicable standards and specifications. Among other things, evidence is collected and examined, sites are visited, and estimates and calculations are reconstructed and analyzed.

If necessary, an advance document review supplements the verification. The verification result, including all findings, is presented to you during the final meeting. If necessary, action plans are agreed upon.

After verification, the results are evaluated by the independent certification board of DQS. If all requirements are met, you will receive a declaration of verification for your company.

For the verification of another report or declaration, for example for a subsequent period of time, a re-assessment is performed. Each verification is valid for the respective GHG statement of your organization and thus has no validity period.
