EMAS - Information on the regulation

The EU Regulation called EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) was first published in 1993 and has been available since 2010 as Regulation EMAS III. Another partial revision on the occasion of the revision of ISO 14001:2015 took place in 2017. As of June 2021, 3 851 European organizations with a total of 12 856 sites were entered in the EMAS register.

The EMAS Regulation was developed by the European Union and sets out requirements for an effective environmental management system based on an independently prepared environmental statement. Thus, in addition to the continuous improvement of your environmental performance in accordance with ISO 14001, EMAS also provides for the regular validation of your environmental statement as well as an environmental audit by specially accredited environmental auditors.

EMAS is suitable for companies and organizations of all sectors and sizes. Since EMAS III, there are simplifications for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) regarding the verification intervals and the validation of the environmental statement.

The environmental statement

Your environmental statement is made available to the public as a validated report. Thus, among other things, your environmental performance and the environmental goals of your company become transparent for all interested parties. The findings from the regular measurements of the environmental impact of your business activities enable you to continuously improve your environmental performance and reduce environmental risks.

How does an EMAS validation work?

In preparation for validation - the equivalent of certification under EMAS - you first conduct your own review of all environmental aspects in accordance with the EMAS regulation (environmental audit).

Once your environmental statement has been prepared, our environmental verifiers review the environmental audit procedure and its implementation.

Finally, the environmental verifiers validate your environmental statement. If successful, your company and your EMAS-validated environmental management will be entered into the European register of sites by the competent body (Chamber of Commerce, IHK).

According to the size of your company, certain verification intervals are determined, usually of three years.
