Regulatory Compliance
Risk Mitigation
Better Stakeholder Trust
Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) aligns strongly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6.3, ISO 14001: Environmental Management Systems and GRI 300: Environmental Disclosures, all of which promote water reuse and pollution prevention. In India, ZLD has evolved from a best practice into a sectoral compliance obligation, particularly in high-impact industries such as textiles, chemicals, distilleries, and pharmaceuticals.
a) Regulatory Compliance & Risk Mitigation
ZLD ensures adherence to CPCB and SPCB mandates, particularly in sectors with high TDS, BOD, or toxic load. By eliminating liquid discharge, organizations lower the risk of non-compliance, permit violations, and environmental litigation.
b) Water Conservation & Resource Efficiency
Industries can recover and reuse a large percentage of their process water, significantly reducing freshwater dependency. This is especially critical in water-stressed regions, where regulatory permits are often tied to recycling metrics.
c) Circular Economy Potential
ZLD enables resource recovery—salts, ammonium compounds, and even chemicals which can be reused in production (e.g., sodium sulfate in dyeing or fertilizers in agrochemicals). This reduces input costs and waste.
d) ESG and Sustainability Credibility
ZLD installations support corporate water stewardship goals and elevate the organization’s sustainability credentials in line with ISO 46001 (water efficiency), GRI 303 and global ESG frameworks. For export-oriented industries, this also strengthens buyer trust in environmentally responsible sourcing.
Industries in sectors like textiles, distilleries, power generation, tanneries, chemicals, and pharma are mandated by CPCB guidelines to implement ZLD as part of their ‘Consent to Operate’ or ‘Environmental Clearance conditions’.
Submit the ZLD design and implementation plan to the concerned SPCB. For new projects, ZLD may be a precondition for environmental clearance. Mandatory for a few industries like textiles and chemicals.
Industries must demonstrate continuous zero discharge through:
SPCBs, guided by CPCB SOPs (2024), issue a ZLD Compliance Certificate after site inspections, documentation review, and sampling. Certifications are subject to periodic review and can be revoked upon deviation.
