What is an Environmental Product Declaration?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a document that transparently communicates verified information about the environmental profile of a product or service, based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and validated by an independent third party.

EPDs are governed by ISO 14025 (Environmental labels and declarations — Type III environmental declarations — Principles), which specifies that the main goal of an EPD is to provide environmental data that enables comparison between products, services, or activities serving the same function.

Unlike other eco-labels, an EPD does not set minimum environmental requirements or thresholds for certification. Instead, it objectively presents the results of an LCA study without requiring products to meet any specific environmental standards.

Benefits for your business

EPDs are increasingly demanded by businesses, especially in the construction sector, and offer significant advantages:

  • They help fulfill customer expectations for environmental information related to the life cycle of products or services.
  • They improve brand image and market transparency by reinforcing a company’s commitment to disclosing complete life cycle environmental data.
  • EPDs must be audited and validated by an accredited independent body, ensuring the credibility and accuracy of the information. This enhances a company’s international competitiveness and enables entry into green markets that may have previously been inaccessible.

How much does certification cost?

The cost of ISO 14025: Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification depends on several factors: the size and complexity of the product, the percentage of outsourced or externally sourced production, and the reference PCR used.

These factors determine both the duration and the cost of the audit. Therefore, a single fixed price cannot be provided upfront. We are happy to prepare a tailored proposal for your company, organization, or agency.
